Justice for Athletes Begins

The Foundation for Global Sports Development was born out of a desire to promote and protect the best parts of sport. Its original name was Justice for Athletes.

Humanitarian Award Debuts

Humanitarian Award Debuts – Richard Pound – GSD launched its prestigious Humanitarian Award at the Winter Games in Vancouver. The first award recipient was Richard W. Pound, who was commended for his decades of efforts to tackle the issue of doping in sport. In recognition of his tremendous efforts, GSD donated $100,000 to an organization of his choice.

Playmakers trip to Vancouver – Youth from The Boys and Girls Clubs of the Peninsula (East Palo Alto) enjoyed several days in Vancouver to celebrate the Winter Games. The youth experienced the local cultural offerings and attended a variety of Olympic events.

The goal of this program is to protect youth in sports programs from experiencing physical, emotional, or sexual abuse.

“Doping and the Culture of Sport” symposium at Pepperdine University – In October of 2013, GSD partnered with Pepperdine University School of Law to bring together the world’s top experts on the topic of doping. Two moderated panels explored the legal, medical, cultural, and ethical issues on the topic. Special guest Professor Arne Ljungqvist provided insights from his extensive work in doping.

Eighty-eight percent of adults agreed that more actions need to be taken to prevent the use of PEDs at the Olympics and in professional sport. The survey was conducted by Harris Interactive.

The Athletes in Excellence Award honors athletes who have used their achievements in sport as a catalyst to inspire positive change. The award recipients are acknowledged for their outstanding efforts in community outreach, humanitarianism and youth mentorship. Exceptional Youth Scholarship

We launched our Exceptional Youth Scholarship in 2015. This scholarship awards 10 high schools seniors each with a $5,000 scholarship. Students are selected for this scholarship based on a combination of academic achievement, community service and mentorship, and financial need.
Playmakers Program becomes an annual event

This year we transitioned our Playmakers Program to be an annual program hosted by the United States Olympic Committee at their training center in Colorado Springs. Fifty youth from Denver and Greeley, Colorado spent 4 days on the campus learning about the Olympic and Paralympic values and how to apply those to daily life.

Our film about the terrorist attack at the 1972 Munich Olympics and its aftermath won Best Documentary at the LA Shorts Fest, which qualifies the film to be nominated for an Academy Award in 2018. <
Symposium Focusing on the 2016 Russian Doping Scandal

GSD’s Humanitarian Award Recognizes Survivors of Abuse in Sport

In 2008 a group of women came foward with reports of abuse. They informed USA Gymnastics that their coach, Doug Boger, had abused a number of gymnasts at his Flairs gym in Pasadena, California in the 1970s and 1980s. They were determined to protect other gymnasts from a broken system that enabled predators to continue coaching and interacting with youth. Instead, they experienced uphill battles and roadblocks from USAG, and to this day their abuser still denies any wrongdoing.
